Legal Services Volunteers Scheme

The Legal Literacy and Legal Awareness programmes are generally carried out through the enlisted NGOs. Before taking up the programme in a particular Gram Panchayat / ADC village / Nagar Panchayat, 5 (five) persons (of whom two are women) with minimum class VIII passed qualification, selected by the concerned Gram Pradhan / Chairman are trained along with the official of the concerned NGO as per specific guidelines. The trained persons are declared as Legal Services Volunteers. The Legal Services Volunteers are entrusted with the following duties and responsibilities.
a) To organize legal awareness camp in every village under Gram Panchayat/ADC village.
b) To encourage settlement of disputes by negotiation and conciliation.
c) To enlighten the villagers on their legal and constitutional rights and duties with specific emphasis on the availability of free legal aid.
d) To enlighten the villagers on the contents of leaflets prepared in local languages.
e) To record pre-litigative disputes as well as disputes in Courts in prescribed form and to submit to the Authority / Committee concerned for counselling and conciliation or settlement through Lok Adalat or to provide Legal Aid.
